Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Rolex Explorer is in overall great vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The caseback shows some wear on the edge. The Mark 5 dial is in great condition with light patina. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely butter yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a matching yellow color. The Oyster bracelet is in overall very good condition with normal signs of wear; it has light stretch between the links.
Description: Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966. Collectors have identified five different matte dial variations for this model and this watch features a Mark 5 version. The ways to tell the dial variation on the Mark 5 is by looking at the "E" in Explorer, the central bar is not center and pushed up towards the top of the letter. This Mark also has a specific coronet type when comparing to the other dials.
This example has a great look with the perfectly aged lume really giving it a vintage look. The lume has all aged pretty evenly and really pops against the matte black dial. We see collectors gravitate towards these late run 1016s and here is your chance to get a lovely example!
